Tim’s team was forced to pause their repairs later that day for the Memorial service held for the recently deceased pilot fighters. Christian stood with Roger Stellick and the other squad leaders near the front of the assembly, wearing full uniform, polished and freshly laundered. They had never lost so many of their pilots at once on a mission, and the occasion called for some additional effort in respect of those who had sacrificed in the battle.

Roger, in particular, seemed most affected by the proceedings, despite the fact that he hadn’t been involved in the fight. He felt keenly, however, the loss of each fighter, and a sliver of self-recrimination churned in his head that if it had not been for the rescue mission launched to save him, these pilots might still be alive.

Colonel Madigan and President Hiro themselves led the service, and Roger felt relieved that he would not be called upon to speak this time. He didn’t trust his ability to give a speech to the assembled crowd without embarrassing himself.

President Hiro spoke first, providing some words to acknowledge the sacrifice of the fighters they’d lost, and finishing on a positive note of making their sacrifice worth it by continuing on, performing their duties. Roger wondered if his own speech had seemed as hollow and filled with empty platitudes as the president’s did now. He knew Hiro’s motive was to acknowledge the pilots’ bravery but also to provide motivation for those still living to fight on, but it still hit Roger as useless words to anyone mourning the loss of close friends and colleagues. Roger had trained most of the deceased pilots whose lives they now honored, and these words, unfortunately, provided no peace to him.

Finally, Colonel Madigan stepped forward to speak. Without preamble, he raised a page and began to read from it.

“Who can know the soul of a fighter?

One who flies above that which other men can only gaze upon?

Who can understand the joy of flight?

Not those who, grounded, admire the very stars over which the pilot sleeps.
